Scholarship numbers are very complex and many factors influence how many players can be signed. Below are a few of the basic rules:
- A team may have a maximum of 85 players on scholarship at a time
- A team may only sign 25 players a year, BUT
- Players that enroll mid-year (January) can count toward the previous class,
- Players who do not qualify academically do not count,
- And, then you have Grayshirts - delaying enrollment until the next January to count toward the next class.

Scholarship attrition occurs because of
  • graduation,
  • early entry to the NFL,
  • transfers,
  • academic disqualification,
  • medical hardships,
  • non-renewal of annual ships (walkons),
  • and, yes, bad behavior.
